Brutalist is a disparaging term and it was rare for architects to use it to describe their own work. Brutalist buildings, often government projects, educational buildings, or high-rise apartments, are typically clad in rough unfinished concrete. In Britain, Brutalist architects such as Alison and Peter Smithson were acquainted with Jean Dubuffet , the primary exponent of Art Brut, and sought to emulate his primitive, visceral approach through the spirit of their designs. Brutalism's Downfall . By the 1970s, however, brutalism lost its edge and many of these monolithic, gravity-defying structures (such as Alison and Peter Smithson's Robin Hood Gardens housing project in East London, which was completed in 1972), were demolished.
